  • What is it?

    NFPA 1, Fire Code, advances fire and life safety for the public and first responders as well as property protection by providing a comprehensive, integrated approach to fire code regulation and hazard management. It addresses all the bases with extracts from and references to more than 130 NFPA® codes and standards including such industry benchmarks as NFPA 101, NFPA 54, NFPA 58, NFPA 30, NFPA 13, NFPA 25, and NFPA 72.

NFPA 3: Recommended Practice on Commissioning and Integrated Testing of Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems

  • What is it?

    Developed in response to a request from the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS), NFPA 3 outlines the commissioning process and integrated testing of fire protection and life safety systems, to ensure systems perform in conformity with the design intent.

  • What does it address?

    This recommended practice covers procedures, methods, and documentation, giving stakeholders a reliable way to verify that active and passive safety systems are optimized to function as intended. It also defines a commissioning team and spells out qualifications for team members.

NFPA 10: Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers

  • What is it?

    NFPA 10 provides requirements to ensure that portable fire extinguishers will work as intended to provide a first line of defense against fires of limited size.

  • What does it address?

    Criteria cover installations for Class A, B, C, D, and K hazards as well as the selection, inspection, maintenance, recharging, and testing of portable fire extinguishing equipment. Includes a list of obsolete fire extinguishers that should be removed from service.

NFPA 13: Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems

  • What is it?

    The industry benchmark for design and installation of automatic fire sprinkler systems, NFPA 13 addresses sprinkler system design approaches, system installation, and component options to prevent fire deaths and property loss.

  • What does it address?

    Comprehensive requirements include sprinkler system design, installation, and acceptance testing; hanging and bracing systems; underground piping; and seismic protection in line with SEI/ASCE 7. NFPA 13 also includes provisions for special storage arrangements.

NFPA 13D: Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems in One and Two Family Dwellings and Maufactured Homes

    NFPA 13D is a residential sprinkler design standard focused on one- and two- family dwellings and manufactured homes. The intent is to provide an affordable sprinkler system in homes while maintaining a high level of life safety.

    Requirements address automatic sprinkler system design, installation, and maintenance including numerous issues such as component listing, hydrostatic tests, sprinkler temperature ratings, design documentation, and hydraulic calculations.

NFPA 13R: Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems in Lowrise Residential Occupancies

  • What is it?

    NFPA 13R is a residential sprinkler design standard focused on low-rise residential occupancies. The Standard's intent is to provide a sprinkler system that aids in the control of residential fires and provides improved protection against injury and life loss in multi-family dwellings.

  • What does it address?

    Requirements concern automatic sprinkler system design, installation, and maintenance including component listing, hydrostatic tests, sprinkler temperature ratings, design documentation, aboveground pipe and equipment, underground pipe, pre-engineered systems, water supply sources, multipurpose piping systems, and hydraulic calculations.

NFPA 14: Standard for the Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems

  • What is it?

    NFPA 14 provides requirements for the installation of standpipes and hose systems to ensure that systems will work as intended to deliver adequate and reliable water supplies in a fire emergency

  • What does it address?

    Provisions cover all system components and hardware, including piping, fittings, valves, and pressure-regulation devices, as well as system requirements; installation requirements; design; plans and calculations; water supply; and system acceptance.
